Village Groups

Hardingham is a thriving village in Norfolk and there is lots going on!  All our groups are invited to report at the Annual Parish Meeting, and a flavour of what they get up to is included here:

Hardingham Church

St George's Church has been the centre of Christian worship, prayer and praise to God for nearly 1000 years. It is now part of the Barnham Broom and Upper Yare Team of Parishes, a Group of 13 parishes with 15 churches.

The Church lies off the road between the old Hardingham station and Hardingham village.

Parking is available outside the church on the grass on the right hand side. In winter bring a torch as there are no street lights. The church has a toilet, suitable for people with poor mobility, and a small kitchen. Refreshments are often served after services.

Book Club

We are a small group who meet on the last Thursday of each month at the home of one of our members. Quite simply we all read the same book, then meet to share our thoughts and opinions. We don’t engage in ‘high brow’ discussion, you don’t need a degree in English literature!

We set our book list for the year by each member suggesting a book, or books, that they have enjoyed or read good reviews for .We read a variety of genres, mainly fiction but some non-fiction.  There is no pressure to host club meetings. Those who do provide tea, coffee and biscuits.

In January we go to a local pub for our annual dinner and take a wrapped book for a ‘ lucky dip’. In February we will each talk briefly about the book we have read.

The book club gives us the opportunity to explore new authors and genres, widening our reading experience.

Hardingham Fete

Each year we hold an annual fete, traditionally on a Sunday at the end of June, to raise funds and socialise

One of the secrets of the fete’s continued success is the variety of traditional games and stalls to entertain the whole family.   Whether it is having a go on the tombola, testing your skills on the skittles, darts or coconut shy or just sitting relaxing over a cup of tea it is always a pleasurable experience in such picturesque surroundings.

Both the plant and cake stalls are usually sold out in double quick time.   There are raffles, games, children’s races and a super white elephant stall making sure that most fete goers happily wander home with a bargain or two.   The marquee houses the flower and produce show, an open show you are encouraged to enter.   One of the best aspects of the whole afternoon is meeting up with new friends and joining in the fun whatever your age.

This is a village effort to raise funds for two village amenities.   One is the Church, a building that has stood for longer than any other in the village –a part of history which will not survive unless care is taken of it.   The other amenity is the memorial hall, a place where people come together and are part of the community.   As its name indicates it is also a memorial to those from the village who gave their lives to safeguard freedom.   It too will not survive without constant maintenance and care.

Preparations for the fete start in earnest in February with a public meeting in the Memorial Hall – look out for the date in Group News.   We are always looking for new ideas and helpers.   Would you be prepared to help –manning or helping on a stall, putting up the marquee, baking a cake or in any other way?

If you are unable to help we do hope you will still come along and enjoy yourself.

Cricket Club

Our 1st team play on Saturdays in Division 4 of the Norfolk Alliance having won Division 4 in 2011.   Our 2nd team play in Division 3 of the Norfolk League having won Division 5 in 2011 whilst a third Saturday side play in Division 7 of the Norfolk League.   On Sundays, our 1st team play in the Peter Parfitt Division 3 with our Sunday 2nd team playing in the Alf Mace division 4 of the expanding Mid Norfolk Sunday League.   We endeavour that those who don’t play on a Saturday should play on a Sunday, thus guaranteeing that every member gets a game of cricket at the weekend.

During the season we hold outdoor net practice on Thursday for adults and on Friday evenings for juniors at the ground at the Memorial Hall, Hardingham.   During the winter we hold regular indoor net practices at Wymondham Leisure Centre.

However there’s much more to Hardingham CC than just cricket we are rightly proud of the social side of our club.
